FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
long-EZ Goes Non-Stop KMFE-KDAY6 hours 45 minutes from McAllen to Dayton07/08/06 -- We achieved a personal best as far as distance in the Long-EZ during our annual trip to New England this year. My wife Madeleine and I flew non-stop from McAllen, TX to Dayton, OH in around six hours and 45 minutes. We departed McAllen at around 5PM and climbed directly to 13500 feet where we had a slight tailwind. We had lot's of fuel and a full oxygen tank. The airplane was running great with low engine temps and burning around 6.5 gallons per hour. Ground speed varied between 175 and 185 knots. The weather was smooth and cool with a few scattered clouds below us. About half of the trip was completed in darkness and for the last hour or so we had to descend to 11500 as our oxygen bottle had been depleted by that point. We were greeted by a friendly tower at KDAY and an operations guy met us at the closed FBO to give us a ride to the on-airport hotel. It was around 1:30AM local. It took us a little to get the old legs moving but no damage done. We landed with around 1 hour and 45 minutes of fuel remaining. The next day we made the relatively short flight (3.1 hours) to Burlington, VT. I had to do a minor exhaust system rigging in Dayton, otherwise we had no mechanical issues. I continue to marvel at Burt Rutan's design and the masterful construction by Joe and Della Lacour.
